Re: Trophy trim tab issue

Tom looking at getting into this installation tomorrow night or the next one. I need some information specific to the new actuators you sent me. I am assuming that the dimensions that are on the installation instructions are different for the new shorten actuators. Could you please send me the link of how to install for the specific actuators? Or post here for everyone?

Jeff,

This image will work for your installation:

Of course you now have the short actuators.

This is the section from the installation instructions that covers mounting the actuators:

If you don't have the installation instructions with the kit here is a link to them:

I hope this is helpful, let me know if you need any additional information.

Re: Trophy trim tab issue

Well tonight I will be laying out the tabs on my hull and starting thier installation. After swapping the hull and cap.

I have a couple questions reguarding the spacer/shimming material I need to use. Due to my hull being rounded where I am mounting these tabs. What is the recommend material for this spacer/shim? Also is it recommended to be larger than the stainless piece wiht the plastic shim (1/8"-1/4"). I was planning on using HMW or High Desity Polyethylene. Will this work. Its going to be quite difficult to shape though. Is there any other plastc material that is recommened?

Also here is a pick of the switch that came with my kit. It is a VC1000. See I prefer to have the RS1000 switch my question is will the RS cover the foot print/hole of the VS switch later? I'm afraid of the VS switch breaking while operating it in high seas.

Jeff,

You can use the materials you mention and I understand your concern about shaping them. Very often nylon or a material such as "Starboard" is used, it works just fine and is a bit easier to shape. I like to tape sandpaper rough side out to the area I will be fitting the shim and rub the pre-shaped shim vertically on it to get an exact final shape.

The mounting plates for your Trim Tabs are large enough that you really don't need to make them much larger, perhaps 1/8" as you mention to get a nice fit and look.

Yes, the Rocker Switch footprint will cover the VC1000 if you decide to change it in the future. You must have a slightly older kit as we discontinued the VC1000 a while ago.

Re: Trophy trim tab issue

Can I ask why it was discontinued? Was it faulty? Is the barrel/lever plastic or metal? Is it a sealed switch? I have not cut my dash yet so I can go with to the other switch RS1000. I'll just sell this switch on ebay if I have to.

Thanks for all the information

Thanks for all the information

The VC1000 was our "standard" control for well over 40 years, and was updated during its production run. It is far from faulty, we have sold more of them than any other control we offer and during the whole time it was covered by our five year warranty.

I actually really like the "joystick" control it gives, it's very intuitive to use, and best suited to mounting on a more horizontal surface than a vertical one.

It is quite weather resistant and while I cannot call it a sealed unit, water intrusion was never a problem. The lever is plastic, however breakage was / is rare as it takes a lot of force to snap it off.

So if it's so good why did we discontinue it?

It has simply fallen out of fashion, and even I have to admit it looks a little "dated" on today's dashboards. Nowadays people favor the look and action of the Rocker Switch controls. One advantage of the Rocker Switch is that its "positive click" makes it a little easier for a novice to make small precise adjustments of the Trim Tabs.

Re: Trophy trim tab issue

After swaping the two halves of the boat in the garage, I started looking at the installation instructions for the trim tabs. I need to cut down the width of tabs due to they are two wide. They interfer with the speedo pick up. I do not want to relocate the pick up so the tab is going to be cut down. Only 1" on the one side.

First question; the tabs need to be the same size from left to right, but does the cylinder have to be dead center of the tab? Or can I only cut off an 1" on one side of he tab, or do I have to cut off both side of the tab? Centering the cylinder.

Then I started looking at placement on the tab on transom. My transom has a radius on the bottom corner. 1/4" approx.

Second question; Can the tab be subflush to the bottom of the hull by 1/4" and if it is do I need to compensate the 1/2" at the end of the cord an additional 1/4"?

Jeff,

It would be best if the the actuator is centered on the Trim Tab.

Note that the hinge plate has a notch in it and the materiel is bent in slightly to keep the Trim Tab from sliding out of the hinge. There is a corresponding notch in the leading edge of the Trim Tab. It is very important that the notches and bend are either kept or duplicated exactly if you cut down the Trim Tab.

Frankly I would move the speedo pickup if possible.

Yes, mount the hinge right where the radius ends and measure up the corresponding distance from the hull bottom when you determine the negative angle.

Re: Trophy trim tab issue

Quick question, finally getting around to install the new pump and hoses. Do the hoses really have to be the same length. Isn't it about the tranfer of fluid and not the length of the hose. Once the hose and the tab are purged of air the hose lenght dose not come into play anywhere (Pressure, flow rate, discharge speed). So why do they have to be the same length? I thinking that with all this extra tubing in the transom it will rub a hole eventually or I'll kink it.

Sorry for the delay in responding, I'm on the road and not always within range of Internet!

Since the lines are a small inside diameter and it is a single acting system there is some friction loss in the system, and it is therefore best is they are close to the same length. It doesn't have to be exact but close is best. If you need to throw a loop in the shorter run and secure it with tie wraps to make up the difference you will be fine. I had to put one loop in my Aquasport when i installed the system and after 9 years no there is no rubbing or kinks.

Sorry a bit late. Installed them last night. One run is half the length as the other. Will this affect the operation of the system? I so where do I get a new piece of hose? Also will need four corner bend fittings.

Re: Trophy trim tab issue

One is about 5-6ft and the other is about 2-3ft. If I do not know f I can make exactly the same. Loop would e very small. Here are some pics of the completed installation.

DSCN1259-1.jpg

You can just make out the tube between the deck drains. A bit tight. The hose sweeps across the transom to the other side. This is amy long run.

DSCN1252-1.jpg

DSCN1247-1.jpg

This is the short run side (starboard side). The tub basically come from th deck drains and sweeps in a big loop up to the pump in the same hatch. this is the 2-3ft run. If I put a loop in the hatch it will block the access to the hatch. I would want to secure the loop to the outside perimeter of the hatch opening. Just out of the way. But I need 4 of the corner thingies.

Here is a pic of the back end so you can get a length idea. The beam is 8ft

Re: Trophy trim tab issue

OK,

Have you tried running them down yet? The one with the shorter line will travel a little faster. But when there is water pressure from the boat moving they will even out a bit. If you really can't make a loop I would suggest you just try running the system as is, I doubt you will be bothered by it at all.

Since you are in Canada we may have to go through our rep up there again. Send your name address and phone number to M.J. Thomas MJTHOMAS@BENNETTTRIMTABS.com and tell him I said you need 4 tube bending clips, no charge. Remind him you are in Canada and he will take care off the rest.
