I am curious, has anyone here replaced a telefex steering cable on an 1802?
Mine was steering stiffly, so I ordered a cable and was in the process of changing it, when I hit a snag...literally.

I had tied a wire to the cable so that I could use it to pull through the new cable, and it pulled out about half way and stopped. (I was able to get it out of the turn tube without removing the motor.)

It seems that Bayliner/Trophy used rubber lined "Adel" clamps to hang the steering and control cables within the hull. There is probably enough room to work them through when assembling the boat at the factory, but the nut on the cable will not pass through one of the clamps. I can just barely see it with a bright light and a mirror...no way to reach it.

Before I just hack saw the old cable, I thought I would check the forum for some wisdom. (I may still have to leave some old cable in the hull as it won't pull back out either...stuck)

(One day later) Hack saw wouldn't cut it....cut-off wheel worked. I'll just leave half of the old cable in the gunwale. I just started to thread the new cable in, and apparently the hole under the helm is not large enough for the nut on the cable to pass through (along with the wiring that shares the hole).

I don't think they put a lot of thought into replacing a steering cable.

Any suggestions before I give up and order hydraulic steering?

Re: Trophy 1802 steering cable

Hydraulic was going to be my suggestion. I love mine. I did go to extremes and get the Teleflex SeaStar Pro. Overrated for my 115 E-Tec and my 100 Mariner (original engine) but the results are fabulous. The Pro series does not drift or cycle fluid like the BayStar or standard SeaStar.

Re: Trophy 1802 steering cable

I got the old cable out, ran the new cable over the adel clamps. Had to use a dremel tool with a roto-zip type bit to enlarge a couple of holes. Also had to loosen the engine slightly (supported on a floor jack) to align the cable in the turn tube. all works fine, have to adjust the trim zink now...turns right if I let go of the wheel. It was so stiff before, it went where you left it!

Do you remember the part # for your steering cable?
