Have been a member here for a little while and have always found the users helpful...sooooo...I'm looking for some info.
I recently purchased a Minn Kota 50# power drive bow mount trolling motor. The factory installed battery leads are 10 awg marine grade cable, approximately 4 foot long, I am looking to run this off of my secondary battery in the stern of my boat, roughly 17 feet away. I contacted Minn Kota to determine the correct size cable that I should use for this length of a run, and was told to use 6 awg....no problem there, now here are my questions.
I pull 6 awg from my battery forward. Do I splice to the factory installed 10awg? or do I remove the existing 10 awg from the motor and run the 6 awg all the way? if I retain the 10 awg, will there be significant voltage drop at the splice, or heat build up? and where do I put my circuit breaker? does it go at the splice? or closer to the battery?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.....and thanks in advance for your help.
Thanks,
Kevin

You can splice it. Circuit breaker goes as close to the battery as possible.

Splice it,,, or use a plug and receptacle. The short piece of 10AWG will have a minimal voltage drop, the splice shouldn't cause any resistance or voltage drop if it's done properly.
