I'm installing a new male plug on a trolling motor. The new male plug has three wires... black - yellow and blue. The recepticle has three female holes but only two wires exit to the battery. The line to the trolling motor has two wires... black and red. The new plug will connect to the trolling motor cable, but which wires of the new plug do I use? And what about that extra wire? Why is there a third wire lead on the new male plug and only two wires going to the battery?

It makes absolutely no difference if there is two, three, or ten terminals on a plug/receptacle. If there are two wires going to the motor, you only need two terminals on the plug and two on the receptacle. The others simply are not used. all you need to do is match the two terminals on the plug (+ and -)to the two terminals on the receptacle. The "juice" doesn't care how the terminals are labeled. They are simply connections (like joining two pieces of wire). Just because there are more terminals than wires doesn't mean you need to use all of them.

Welcome to iboats!

The extra wire is there to connect to a second battery, required for a 12/24 volt trolling motor.

Thanks gents.... I found out that I have a 24volt male plug. And as you say the juice could care less!
