Trolling Motor Blows Fuse only @ High Speed

I have a newer 24 volt Motorguide trolling motor, that will blow a fuse whenever you bump the speed up to 5 (the highest setting). I have tried a bigger fuse with no luck. Any thoughts?

Well, end the suspense, what size fuses are you talking about?

What is the gauge wire feeding the motor and how long is it?

And what is the max current draw spec, and what does the owners data pkg say about fuse size?

I prefer a circuit breaker as they can handle in-rush current better than a fuse. Current is very high at intial start but drops quickly. Circuit breakers handle that spike whereas a fuse (unless its a slo-blow) cannot. I would guess you are simply using too small a fuse.

This may sound crazy but..... take the prop off and check for fishing line. It could cause it to bind and draw more amps.

We usually install 50amp circuit breakers on trolling motors, any smaller usually won't cut it.

Motors are designed to rotate at certain RPM at certain amperage given a specific load. When over loaded, D.C. Motors will slow down considerably. In such condition, it will draw more current due to less resistance. This is often the case at max RPM or at full load.

Your trolling motor blowing fuses maybe a case of over loading the boat.
