I have a 140 mercruiser on a 1978 regal going to restore.on the up trim the wires have been cut, I need to raise the lower unit so I can put boat in the barn.can I drill new holes and run new wires that way if the up trim is still good. without taking everything apart to replace.going to run wires up and over boat for now to see if it will raise up for me.if not can the lower unit be raised by hand just to get in the barn?? ps the wires were cut about 6 inches on the trim itself.no wires coming thur boat expect for the down trim.thank you for your time. Michael

Re: trims

Blue is up and green is down. Not knowing which pump you have there may be a relief screw on it.

Re: trims

Why don't you just remove the drive if all you are going to do is put it in a barn and store and restore is. Eventually it will have to come off anyway.
If all you want to do is raise it, remove the aft trim cylinder pin and lift it up.
To remove the drive, you remove the same pin, put the shifter in forward, remove the 6 mounting nuts and pull the drive off. Done deal.

Re: trims

All of the wires to raise the drive are inside the boat. If you want to see if your trim up works, look inside for a purple/white wire connector and a connector with two blue/white wires going into it (back near the transom). The wires from the trim limit switch plug into these two connectors. If you jumper those two connectors together your trim up switch should work, assuming of course the pump works. Good luck.

I think you are a little confused here. None of the wires that go through the transom control the trim up/down functions, except the trim limit switch on the port side, the starboard side wires are for the trim position sensor. Do not drill any holes in the transom for the wires. If you are doing a restoration you will have plenty of time to replace those wires properly once you have the outdrive off and are doing the bellows etc. All of the circuitry for the trim pump is inside. blue/white wires are usually up and green/white wires are down.
