trim up start mercury

Hello!
I got a 75 HP 1984 Mercury 2 stroke outboard. Last night I accidentally tried to start it when it was fully trimmed up out of the water. I realized immediately and shut it down (it ran for 2 seconds max). After I trimmed it down, I had problems starting and idling. Would not accelerate but once started I could get back to ramp at idle speed.
Cooling works just fine but was a different noise when running.
I believe the engine/carburetor angle has something to do with this problem.

It there a fail safe mechanism to prevent starting outboard when trim is up? I will definitely be more careful but I would like to have a light on dash or something. A trim gauge will not be enough.

Thank you in advance!

There should be a mercury switch on the motor that prevents it from starting when tilted up. It connects to the black/yellow wire.

That incident should not have caused any damage. Maybe some dirt got sucked into the carbs?

update:
Having stirred some trash in the carbs made sense to me so I took them both out and rebuild them.
Big surprise when I tried to adjust the mixture screws because engine sounded wrong. I checked and I had no spark on lower 2 cyls.

With a DVA meter, I identified a bad stator and replaced it 2 days ago. Still got no spark on same cylinders. I switch stator wires on the switchbox around and problem stayed on lower two. So I went ahead and ordered a new switchbox. It's due to arrive tomorrow and hopefully it will get the job done.
