Trim/ Tilt wiring Question.

Having an issue with my power trim and tilt. Have a mercruiser with an older single solenoid setup. I don't have any limit switches connected. Basically the previous owner had a mess of wires. The problem is I can lower the outdrive but NOT raise it UP. From what I have read the Solenoid is for the UP. If I bypass the solenoid it goes up so I know its not the motor. So I am assuming the problem is the Solenoid (not certain though). As for the wiring, the wires that run to the trim switch up front appear to be 10awg and 12 awg. But the wires on the switch are maybe 16awg. I would suspect an issue here. I don't have a trailer button. It is just wired to a rocker switch. I reviewed the wiring diagrams but nothing says what gauge the wire should be. I would like to just replace the wires. Any one have any input or insight?

DonS just posted a link to the wiring diagram couple days ago, If I can find it I will post a link to it.

It could also be in the switch, I wouldn't rule that out. Check for voltage at the solenoid.

Re: Trim/ Tilt wiring Question.

I already ruled the switch out as the cause. That was my first assumption. I am pretty certain it is the solenoid they are only $20 so I'll just get a new one. Does any one have any ideas about the wiring. How do I connect the wires from the pump which are 10 gauge to the switch which is 16 gauge with out creating a hot spot in the connection because of the gauge decrease. That switch may not be able to handle the amperage. Everything worked before the solenoid went, but I feel that there is another issue with the wiring. I just want to make it safe and the way it should be (or at least close).

Re: Trim/ Tilt wiring Question.

Ended up salvaging two solenoids from a spare pump I had. So now the UP and DOWN each have a solenoid instead of just the UP. Now the wiring isn't an issue. Also wired in a switch at the stern.

Re: Trim/ Tilt wiring Question.

I missed your last comment. I would run the same size wire to the solenoid as the motor: 10ga. The switch wire can be smaller, as it is only powering the solenoid not the trim pump.

So in post#7... are you asking a question or telling us your all set?

Re: Trim/ Tilt wiring Question.

Thanks. I did find the original Solenoid was bad. As far as post #7 I was having an issue with the wiring because it was a single solenoid setup. But since I added a solenoid on both the up and down, the wiring isn't an issue anymore. Didn't cost a dime to fix. Its a good thing to have some spare parts around. so everything is good to go now. Thanks
