Re: Trim/tilt setting on outboard

Let me add to the confusion and this may have already been said but a different way. The starting point for setting engine height is to set it so the the cavitation plate is even with and parallel to the bottom of the hull. The cavitation plate is the horizontal flat surface just above the prop. You adjust from there.

If you have to lower your motor to get to that point do not worry about the motor interfering with the boat draining. Tilt the motor up so that it clears the driveway and jack up the front of the boat till the bow is higher than the stern. The motor should be tilted all the way up with the lock engaged as you roll down the highway.

Solittle, I'm not positive, but I think he meant "how do I drain the water from the engine"??????
As far as the tilt pin goes, it doesn't hit the pin when full down....mine turns too. I had my buddy bring the boat to 2500 rpm, and I reached over and COULD NOT turn the pin.....I believe it is a stress reliever when all the way down, for this IS the position at which you should be before dropping the hammer.....the most load on the hydro. system. :)

Re: Trim/tilt setting on outboard

Walleye said what I meant I am concerned with the motor draining all the way when out of the water.

I think this is going to be something I take coare of nect season. I don't have a garage to work in over the winter and I want to educate myslef more on modifying the transom. What I mean is if I do have to drop the motor down 4-5" I will have to drill new holes in the transom and I would assume plug up the old mounting holes. I may look at getting a jack plate if I am going to do all this work.

Wait a minute here.......By what you've just said about having to modify your transom to get it down, you are leading me to believe you have a 20" shaft on a 25" transom.......Measure from top of transom to bottom of boat keel, or where that line would intersect, and give us a measurement, please......

Re: Trim/tilt setting on outboard

The boat is from Laser Boats of Texas. The model is a 1720. I have searched the net and couldn't find anything one them. Are they still in business?

I think I am going to have to resign myself to easying it onto plane. I don't think I w3ant to tackle replacing the engine. It works fine, just have to be carefull I don't over rev the engine.
Thanks for everyone's help. You guys are great.

Laser Boats must not return phone calls. Called a dozen times and left messages. Oh well.

Re: Trim/tilt setting on outboard

My 2 cents If you have one or two inches of height adjustment on your motor before drilling more holes just adjust the motor down the inch or two you can. If it helps a little you know your going in the right direction. If it helps a lot you may be ok. If it dosn't make any difference take a better look at your prop.
