Trim/Tilt not holding

Hey guys, I have a 1977 55 Evinrude. When I have my motor tilted up due to shallow water, and I'm running at least half throttle, the motor goes down by itself. It's not holding the position that I want to keep it at. Is there an O ring or something I can replace to keep it from leaking down? Thanks in advance for all the help!

Are there 2 cylinders mounted externally to the transom bracket ?

I would then think that it is a tilt only unit.-------They will not hold the motor up above idle.

Racerone,

You are correct. It is a tilt only unit. So when I get above idle, if won't hold the unit up?

Correct they are not designed to hold above idle.-------------Fortunately you asked questions before opening your toolbox / wallet.

Hey racerone!
You've been really helpful lately with my questions, so I've got another one for you. A well known outboard mechanic told me that if my intake gasket hasn't been replaced on my 1977 55 Evinrude in the past 3-5 years then I should get it done. I just got it running after it sitting up for about 5 years. Should I have it replaced or is it one of those things that if it's not broke don't fix it??

Why would you have to have a gasket replaced every 3-5 years? News to me.

He said that year and make had a problem with the intake gasket. It was also news to me, that's why I wanted I general consensus.

I too have never heard of that. There is only a vacumm pressure on that gasket and I doubt it's much more than 7" a best.

I have a 1975 50hp, a 1983 60hp and a 1986 50hp in the garage and none seen to have a problem.

My 2 cents on that.---------On many motors there is an oil return hose from the bottom of the crankcase to the top.------On these motors there is an internal passage way for this.------This could be blocked by debris or a failed gasket.---------The mechanic may be helping you by suggesting that you check this out.--------Untill you check you do not know what condition you have.

I suppose that's a possiblity but I've never heard of anyone changing an intake gasket every 3-5 years because of it.

It is not hard to inspect / replace this gasket.--Just nuts and bolts work.
