I have a 1975 Johnson 135 HP w/T&T

I was taking it to the boat shop to get the water impeller replaced.

I hit the aft switch to lower and raise the motor and it would go up and NOT down. So I tried the switch at the throttle control and it worked fine.

I asked the tech to install a new aft tilt switch along with the water pump. (preventative maintanance). He said it wasnt the switch but the pump motor itself. He said it was getting hot. When it cools down ,it works again. He acted like he didnt want to fool with it.Told me the motor is hard to find ,ect.

So, does the motor/pump unit come apart, or does the whole thing have to come off??

Is there a problem to replace or rebuild the pump motor??

The motors can be rebuilt, just bring it to your local alternator/starter repair shop. If it is beyond repair, they are difficult to find, but are out there. I buy from the following trusted site.

Now in regards to your question, I am a little suspicous of the mechanics diagnosis. A faulty trim motor would not accept directions from one switch yet not the other. That is silly. That is not to say of course that the trim motor does not need rebuilding/replacing. You may have 2 seperate issues, may not.

First try jumping the motor directly from a 12 V battery. The green lead is for down, the blue for up. If the motor functions both directions properly, you know that it is not at fault.

Here is some electrical tests for your 3 wire system, the directions work in conjunction with the diagram. If your issue is not electrical, you may have a hydraulic issue. Can you hear the trim motor trying to work when the down button is pushed?

DOWN CIRCUIT

1. Move red meter lead to point E3 in junction box, push trim switch in the down position. Battery voltage should be indicated. If trim motor does not run, test motor.

2. If no voltage is indicated at point E3, move meter red lead to trim switch at point E4 and meter black lead to point G1. Push trim switch in down position. If meter indicates battery voltage, lead is open between point E3 and E4.

3. If no voltage at point E4, move meter red lead to point E5 in trim switch. If battery voltage is indicated, trim switch may be defective.

4. If no voltage is indicated at point E5, check continuity of ground lead from trim gauge G1 to junction box point G. If ground lead is good, move meter red lead to junction box at point E1 and meter black lead to point G on junction box. If battery voltage is indicated, lead is open between E1 and E5.

The tech said that the switch at the throttle acted up on him while they were fooling with it. He said the moter was getting voltage, but was getting hot when the switch was aplied and not turning, he said when it cooled down it would work again.

Do I need to wrap it with a hammer a couple of times....LOL

If you can't hear it stalled when trying to cycle down, why does it get hot?

have you tried the circuit tests?
