Hi this might be a weird question but can you use automatic transmission fluid as hydraulic fluid for a trim tilt system. I recently replaced my 1975 evinrude 85hp trim tilt motor with a second hand mercury 115hp trim tilt, filled with transmission fluid now i see leaks and the thing wont trim up very fast. I was going to try to repair the leak but wondering whether to keep using transmission fluid as i read somewhere it will do the job. Is quite expensive here in New Zealand for parts so we have to mix and match.

tranny fluid my have less viscosity than hydraulic fluid. You should be able to get a couple litres of hydraulic fluid from you automotive parts stores.

As long as the ATF is Dextron II, you should be okay.
