Trim/Tilt assembly install

I have a new trim/tilt assembly for my '83 115 evinrude. The motor is on the boat, and the old trim/tilt was hard to get out. I had to beat the assembly out with a little sledge hammer. I figured it was corrosion since I been plagued by it with everything else on this motor. I tried to get the new unit in and it would never go all the way in. From the damage I inflicted on the transom, it looks like the bottom back of the unit is scraping the transom in order to rotate the unit in. The tilt pin(the adjustable one) is rusted solid to the transom brackets, I tried using my welding torch but ended up setting fire to my bottom paint and screwing up the fiberglass/wood in one spot. To me it looks like I have to remove the motor, again, and get the trim/tilt unit installed that way.

Am I correct or do I need to cut this tilt pin out? Without starting anymore fires on my wood boat.

Probably the best way to beat this is to remove the motor from the boat and go from there. JMO.

Should be able to do it by removing the port side bracket after taking off the steering link and tilt tube nut. You'll need to support the motor though, and for that effort it would be just as easy to lift the motor off the boat.

Everything with this motor seems easy at first... I've had this motor about a year, came with my project Thompson, and just decided to install it on my Tollycraft since the twin merc 500's were very neglected. But now that I've burned the motor paint in several places I may as well paint it too. Perhaps white to match the boat.

It is common for the tilt pin as you call it to corrode in especially in salt water and on pontoons where people leave them in the water. If they are greased regularly no problem. I my experience trying to remove them with heat is futile and may damage the seals in the trim unit. I use my air cut off tool and cut them off. The bits left in are almost impossible to drill out except with a drill press which means removing the transom brackets. The bolts in the assembly are most likely corroded in but an air impact gun wili possibly remove them. A wrench will just shear the bolts off. No amount of PB blaster will help if you can't get the bolts started. Hope this helps.
