Trim Switch Malfunction

Hi, I have a 1984 Checkmate with the Quicksilver Throttle/Shift Controller. While out for the day, we came in and couldn't trim up. Looked and the 20amp inline fuse was blown. We managed to hotwire to the motor to raise it. Got home and replaced the fuse, and we can use the trim switch to lower the drive, but not raise(does nothing). I can use the trailer button to raise the drive. Need some advice as to whether it is something in the trim switch itself or should I look somewhere else. Also When I took the shifter handle apart to look to see that the connections are good, a small ball bearing fell out. Can't see anywhere in the handle it could possibly go! It was just rattling around in there. Thanks, Dan

If you have to use the trailer button to go up the trim limit switch on the port side of the drive is bad. They are kind of a pita to replace you can just insert a jumper wire where it comes in the boat and attaches to trim harness. Just need to remember not trim up to far while at speed.

Thanks, I worked my way back last night to see how far back I had power. Got to the stern and the wires going to the limit switch and sender are bare and corroded, insulation is cracking and deteriorated. Looks like I will have to take it in to get them replaced, I'm pretty sure I cant get them in without drive removal. Thanks for your input, Dan

Thanks, I worked my way back last night to see how far back I had power. Got to the stern and the wires going to the limit switch and sender are bare and corroded, insulation is cracking and deteriorated. Looks like I will have to take it in to get them replaced, I'm pretty sure I cant get them in without drive removal. Thanks for your input, Dan

There is a 7/16 " bolt head up there above the bellows and a plate that pushes the limit switch and trim sender wiring in and seals it.

Yes you can do it and if you go to you tube there is a video of a guy doing just that...but you can also jumper it out inside and go boating...

Yeah, I saw that. His was a Gen2, mine is a Gen1. Gen 1 has 2 bolts holding it in place, the one on the bottom, I can see, but there is another above it that is barely visible, much less getting a wrench on it. I guess I'm going to have to leave it to the professionals. Thx

It is a diy possible repair - just wait until you have to do the bellows. Otherwise not worth the work IMHO.

That old of a boat, you should seriously think about overhauling both rams. If salt used, definitely.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... Just use the trailer button, til you do the bellows, 'n lower shift cable, then do the whole transom job at once,.....
