Long story short-Trim relay is out on down cycle[just clicks]- swapped working relay from up cycle and now down trim works. The challenge now is finding a relay that works. The original is a siemens- so far I have tried a tyco which came in a evinrude johnson package[does not work] next was a sierra [does not work] the part numbers are a cross reference to 586224 both relays are supposed to be the correct replacement[both just click like the non working siemens- any idears or other company possibilities. At a loss and I can not find a siemens relay.Thank you Andy

it clicks so the coil is probably ok can you open the relay itself without destroying it.. could be just dirty contacts inside . if accessible burnish the contacts

seeing you are sol on the relay .... try a small 1/16 drill hole and spray some wd40 inside or...contact cleaner

publish your relay make& mdl maybe somebody has one spare or for sale

good luck

Those trim / tilt relays ( $25 ) are available all day long.-----I say you have a wiring problem and there is nothing wrong with the new or old relays.

Old working relay was swapped in both up and down modes and it worked fine -I do not feel based on that it is a wiring issue.

Could be wrong but I think the relays are electrically interlocked so you may be replacing the wrong relay.
By that I mean power going to the UP relay also has to go through a set of normally closed contacts on the DOWN relay which may not be closed when the relay is not energised.
Instead of replacing the relay you think is faulty replace the other one.

The confusion continues-swapped out each relay and documented trim cycle-facing engine block from console I plugged in the original relays I refer to them as o1 and o2 the new relay I will call n1----[o1 and 02 trims up]----[o2 and o1 trims down]----[o1 and n1 trims up]---[n1 and o1 trims down]--[o2 and n1 trims down]---[new and o2 trims up]// again facing engine looking at stern from inside boat first relay mentioned is top left second top right on block. only the one trim cycle mentioned works the other attempt to the other cycle just clicks. ??

Here is a UTUBE of a 2 wire system... may not be yours but basically all the relays will do is apply juice to the trim motor one way and reverse the juice polarity to reverse the direction so it is important that while one relay applies +12V on one side the other side must have a ground ,

What seems confusing is that the up and down cycle works depending on the placement of the relays all be it they should be the same.

has indicated the motor works with Bat & grd in alternate directions

either one relay is not putting out it's 12v while the other one properly appies a ground to the other wire or vice versa one relay is not providing a proper ground while the other relay puts out 12V to reverse the current flow

1- take a bat and ground from your battery & apply the juice to the motor wires to determine which wire needs to be at 12v and the other ground to establish up or down direction

2-once you establish which wire is which for the down movement get a friend to activate DOWN and establish which is missing from the motor side .... the ground or the 12v

3- IF grd or bat is missing make certain the relay base supplying the relay socket is properly grounding and bat. test the pin base to confirm the relay base is supplying +12v and ground

pin for pin the relays are the same so in a stable (not operating up or down) the relay bases will have the same conditions present...compare the two

do the same test while activating the up and down switche positions. green white and blue white should apply 12v to the base pins (btw all colors may not be the same as yours this is just a diagram)

see diagram example

I can't explain what's happening but here's where I'd go to move forward.

Confirm the exact model of the motor then get either a genuine factory manual or a genuine circuit diagram for that model.

Interesting point, the relays in post #13 appear to be different from each other.

you need to try putting o1and o2 you say it trims up so push the switch for down trim hold your finger on relays to confirm which relay clicks then remove that relay and install the new relay press trim switch trim should work both ways i think you have 2 bad relays one is bad on up side and one is bad on down side if my thinking is right

A very simple system. Two wires from power and two wires from motor. The fact that you can even get the motor to turn means you have power and the motor works. So the issue is either a relay or the wiring at the relay sockets. I'm not really familiar with how the units are constructed.
I would suggest you just buy a second relay and install 2 new ones. If that doesn't solve the issue then look at taking the relay box apart to look for burnt wiring or sockets.

Is this a fault that just happened or is the motor new to you and it's been like this since you got it?
