Need some basic information on how a trim pump works. My guess is that if motor spins in one direction the out drive will go up. Now if the polarity to the motor is changed the motor spins in the opposite direction and now the out drive will go down. Is that correct?

There are two different types of motors. The two wire motor works exactly as you described, with the PTT relays serving to reverse the polarity of the voltage on the PTT motor. Power is applied to one of the PTT motor wires via the relay. The other wire on the PTT motor is grounded, when the relay is not energized.

Older PTT systems have a 3 wire motor. The motor is wound with a center winding ground. Power is applied to one side of the winding to spin the motor in the up direction. Alternatively, power is applied to the other side of the winding to spin the motor in the down direction. Solenoids provide power to one of the windings at a time. The other winding is left open.

And, it's hydraulic. The motor actually pumps fluid. It's not gear driven.

Gee, is that the correct PTT pump/reservoir? My '88 Alpha 1 used the white plastic reservoir that bolted (1 bolt) to the trim pump.

Yea I know. Thats what was on the boat. Had a single solenoid setup. Couldnt even find a wiring diagram for it. Made by prestolite.

Just pulled the motor and ran the wires right to battery. Doing that I got to hear that motor take its last breath. It slowly spun for about a second and that was it. Wouldnt even spin in the other direction.

Hey you sparked a great idea! Pulled the motor apart and one of the brushes was stuck. It wasnt touching the armature. Cleaned it up and it works like a charm! Thanks
