Trim Pump issues

Hello,

I am having an issue and need some advise on where to go,(besides crazy).
My old trim pump died last year, replaced it, but the issue is I replaced it with one that had 2 relays/selinoids and converted that to just the 1 silenoid, pump works, but when I got to start the boat the silenoid just clicks,
and I know the battery is good, it was just taken off the charger and I even took one out of my vehicle.
to make things clear, the silenoid that is clicking is on the trim pump itself, and not the starter silenoid...

I am thinking the wiring may have gotten messed up, any ideas on where to find a good wire diagram to go from 2 silenoids to1?

any ideas would be certainly welcome.

Thanks

Re: Trim Pump issues

You need 2 solenoids not one, the wiring going to the helm on a 2 solenoid system is smaller than the wiring on the single system.

Thanks Don,
The original pump that was in there only had 1 solenoid, maybe that is because there is no 3 button switch at the helm? all it is, is a toggle up and toggle down switch, and no tilt or trim in the handle either.

does that make sense?

Ok, you have a single toggle switch for up and down without a trim limit switch or a gauge is that correct?

Yes and no, lol....there is a gauge and there are trim limit with a single toggle switch, the gauge is not functioning as the wires on the trim switches is all corroded and broken.

Re: Trim Pump issues

Are you using the trim limit, or want to? You can't use it with a single toggle switch. you have to have another switch to bypass the trim limit so you can put the drive up to trailer position.

Re: Trim Pump issues

at this stage, I am not going to be pulling the whole drive off just to replace the switches, so no, I have been using the boat the way it is for the last 5 yrs and just want to get it back out, and this little issue is holding me up.

So I am just gonna stay with the toggle switch for now, and when I do an overhaul of it this fall and winter, I will replace everything then and get a side mount control with tilt and trim in the handle, at which point I will wire up for that.

Re: Trim Pump issues

since it only has 1 solenoid now, would that cause the down to go really slow? up is really fast.

Yes, Low amperage through the small wiring, that is why they stopped using the single solenoid system 30+ years ago, and why they use slave solenoids.
Hook up a second solenoid as shown in the wiring diagram and it will work.

Re: Trim Pump issues

The harness wiring for both 1 and 2 solenoid set-ups is the same. Just unplug the harness, change the pumps and plug the harness back in... No other changes need be done... If it was just the pump motor, same thing. Pump has 3 wires. Black to ground and blue to UP solenoid. The green is the different one. In a 1 solenoid system it goes to the back of the harness connector, in the 2 solenoid system it goes to the DOWN solenoid. I really don't see where the problem is.

Re: Trim Pump issues

This is probably a stupid question but a friend of mine gave me a new trim tilt pump/motor. Problem is when I went to hook it up one of the hydraulic lines, the screw on the end is to small to screw into the pump. I have a pre alpha stern drive. Does that mean the trim tilt is not compatible with my boat. I have an old Glastron-mercruiser 898 305. Thanks

You need to start a new thread of your own salfred31, include what your new pump is as well as your old one.

Best start your own thread and not hijack this one....
