I have a 79 mercruiser 228 305 CID Serial #5431717. The trim wil go up, no problems or hesitations. However, it won't go down. Acts like it wants to, it jumps once, when u push the button like it's gonna start moving but then nothin.
HELP!!!!

Does the motor run whilst trying to go down?

If you push or stand on the drive whilst pressing down does it move then?

Yes it does to both your questions!!! :) Just tried "bleeding" the lines too and noticed it will go down real slow if line is loose but if I tighten back down quits movin

Re: Trim problems

Not sure it will help, but here is my two cents:

I had a similar problem with my 84 Mercruiser 260. It would go up fine, but down very slowly, at best, mostly only when moving through the water. I ended up doing replacing the "Down Pressure Relief Valve" (I also did the "Up" valve at the same time). This solved my problem.

If you have a Oildyne trim pump, this might be your problem. You can look up Mercruiser Service Bulletin 83-34, for trouble shooting and solving.

Good Luck!

I had the same problem, it would only trim down if I had someone push the drive down, or if the boat was moving through the water quite fast. After some time checking the pump and hydraulic system I concluded to change both the trim cylinders for new ones. I did and now it trims up and down just fine, not a cheap solution though.

You are the greatest!!! Been looking for the problem for 3 days now. I never would have guessed those cylinders, they weren't leaking or anything. Got super lucky tho, a friend had some that he pulled off another boat before it was junked. He GAVE them to me!!(not trying to rub in) so not only did it fix my problem but the price was right too. Again thanx for the tip :)
