Trim position sensor adjustment?

Re: Trim position sensor adjustment?

You need to measure across the 2 wires. You just need one of them disconnected from the gauge so you are only measuring the resistance of the sender and not the gauge too. Do you have the manual so you know what the measurements are supposed to be?

Make sure you take Don's advice and make sure that lever is still intact.

I have the gauge and I rarely even look at it. When you find out how much that sender cost and what a pain in the butt it is to get at the connector, you may change what you think! :)

Re: Trim position sensor adjustment?

11 +/- 1 ohm per the manual page Don linked. So to be clear, if the wires measure outside of range it means the sender is bad, or that the rotational adjustment is out? Or can it read 11 ohm and be completely out of adjustment?

Is the integrity of the lever #16 something that can be determined once the sender is removed by wiggling or twisting on it?

Regarding replacing the sender, could the wires be cut and reliably re-sealed to the new sensor wires so that the connector would not need to be accessed? Or does the connector go bad also in these situations?

Thanks much! This is absolutely one of the most helpful forum boards I've ever been on! ( Chevy, KTM, Honda, and MTB included)

Yes, you turn it to get the right ohms reading. You may even have to take it off and move it a tooth one way or the other. Time to stop talking about it, and actually look at it and try adjusting it.

The sender is $250. Do you really want to cut the wires?

Uh, weird. But whoo hoo!! So I go out to adjust and check the sender. I start by turning on the battery cut-off switch, turn on the key and trim all the way down whilst watching the gauge .....and it goes all the way down and as the outdrive bottoms out! I go up and down a few times and all seems good. WTF? But I'll take it!
Maybe there was some sort of a static charge in the system that had discharged over the last 4 days or because of switching the batter off? Maybe there is a leak or short in the wiring only when in the water? Whatever.
I want to thank all of you for your time and consideration! Sorry for the false alarm (at least at this juncture) but judging by the tone of this thread it sounds like a matter of when not if on this sender thingy. :suspicious:
Carry on :)

Hopefully, its not water that entered the sender before and now its gone that caused the issue. The senders fail because of water intrusion. The sender is just a potentiometer so if the wiper hits a bad section, it will read funny. Hope its not your problem.

Hmm. Maybe I should look around the senders shaft for a seal that would like to be greased? Or blob silicone where the wires enter the sender? FWIW this boat is almost exclusively used in fresh water.

Re: Trim position sensor adjustment?

Update: Good news and bad news.
Good- I loosened the senders bolts, rotated the sender and was able to better align the gauges needle position with the drives :)
Bad- the lower bolt holes threads in the pivot housing were corroded and I broke that bolt off in it trying to extract and grease it to prevent it from completely seizing....:censored::facepalm:

The sender seems to be well secured with just the upper bolt, but they fixed the sender there with two bolts for a reason. Anyone want to speculate whether one will suffice??
Extracting a stainless bolt from cast aluminum does not sound like fun at all, but I fear that with repeated raises and lowering something is gonna give :blue:
