hey evebody i am new to to this site but have done som research on here and everyone seems to be helpful. (I am already going to appologize for my grammer as my girlfriend did all my english classes when i was younger). I have done some research on this but i would like to get some answers on my specific setup so i am sorry if some do not like when a new thread is made about the same stuff. Here is the rundown, I have a 05 1448 tracker all weld mod v jon boat with a 20 in transom, my motor is a 92 25hp suzuki long shaft. my Cav plate sits about 1 in below the bottom of my boat. I do pretty much everything with is from bever hunting to fishing to bowfishing to running small rivers bowhunting, i know that a jet motor is the way to go for running shallow but i need a strong reverse and i dont think that is the way to go for me. I usually have 2 people in the boat with all the equipment needed for whatever i am doing. I need my boat to run shallow as i can, plus be able to plain out witha big load, during bow season i end up running 15 or so miles up a shallower river and the later the season the shallower it gets. In my mind i think that i could mount a cmc power trim 1in higher or so to do what a jackplate would do plus trim up. I was hopeing that i could trim the motor up and hall a## and that would make me run shallower plus pick up or maintain speed and help me plain out. I personally like the idea of a power trim and think that would be the way to go. But i have learned what i personally like is not always the right way to go. so if you guys could help me out, give me some pros and cons of each or let me know what you would do it would be greatly appreciated. Or just tell me to keep dreaming if that is what i need to do i can take critisism so dont hold back on your thoughts. Thank you for your time, and look forward to learning from everyone on here.

I have a jackplate and I can run the outboard roughly 1" higher then the top of the transom. Much higher then that and the prop starts to slip when turning.
I'm guessing your only going to get a few inches or runnable height out of a power trim unit. I guess it would work ok if you only needed to raise the motor in the shallow spots and drop the motor down in the deep stuff.
There was a guy at the river where I fish and he had a Mac's River Runner mounted on his outboard. He said it works great and he didn't lose any power by mounting it. That's always an option.

A 700 dollar cmc power trim/ tilt will not let you run at high speeds any shallower. the motor will still be at the same height in the water..
You could raise the motor up 1 inch by putting a 1 inch piece of aluminum square tubing between the clamp and transom. if works bolt the motor thru the transom leaving the tubing in place.

for what you're doing, a jack plate is best; tilt is second best. Third is a series of different size sticks to hold the motor up!

Trim lets you get through (or out of!) shallow spots at low speed; you don't use it to reduce depth at planing speed, and it actually works against you at the in-between--you raise the motor and it pushes the stern deeper.

But consider loosing the long shaft; you are trying in part to fix a problem created by the wrong motor.

I agree that a jack is the only thing that will do what he wants... and it seems he doesnt undertand the way a trim unit from CMC works....nothing like a jack plate!!!

but i totally dont understand why you think he has the wrong motor. he has a long shaft transom, and he has a long shaft motor...

no matter where exactly is static motor puts the cav plate...1" low, dead on, or 1" high...he is in the standard range...

thanks guys i guess a jack plate would be the way to go. I was thinking i would just get a manual one cuz as i understand once i find the spot that works the best i wont be moving it much right? dose anyone have any suggestions on what would be a good jack plate for a smaller boat? and also would smart tabs be of any help or would that be a waste of money also?

Why waste money on a jackplate once you find the sweet spot.
If this a tiller motor, you will be setting that motor at least 4 inches back from transom making steering very unpleasent.
You sort of have to do the math.???
Not trying to be a No it all. Been there done that.
You can raise the motor1 inch for 2 bucks.
