If you trim gauge in the dash is reading incorrectly while the boat is running then this should have nothing to do with your trim switch. Does it read correctly when not running? More likely there could be a loose or corroded connection between the sensor and gauge or one those 2 parts are defective.

Triple check all of your wiring, especially the connectors at the rear of the boat. Sounds like you may have corrosion on a wiring harness that is jumping power from your ignition + wire to your gauge wiring. I had the exact same problem and that's what it was..

Try turning the key on but not starting the engine. Does it still do it?

In any case, it's always a good idea to be hyper sensitive about electrical issues..

Bad trim sender. These fail all the time. I have changed mine but not going to bother after this one fails again.

Mine failed too. The wires were broken from too much bending left and right.
Instead of ordering a new one and going through a major pain of swapping it out (so I hear), I just did some soldering and waterproofing of the wires (I only had to make 2 connections, not all three), and it works just fine.
I did it while the outdrive and the pivot housing were off, which made it a LOT easier.

Mine failed on my 95 maxum too, but im not to worried about it. I trim the motor out by feel and if I know it is getting shallow ill go back and make sure the drive is up enough before i proceed into shallow water.
