i have a 1444 g3 jon witha 9.8 4 stroke tohatsu. when i adjust the trim angle, what does the up or down do? am breaking it in now and wonder if it is worth it to play around with the angle. i usually run with 2 guys and gear during fishing season maybe 550lbs, the tm batts are up front. any advice is welcome.

Re: trim adjust

Welcome aboard, and congratulations to your son for serving our country! The manual trim on that motor is used to help it run efficiently. Trimmed to low and you will notice the bow plowing. Trimmed to high and you will notice the bow up and maybe loss of steering control. You will eventually find a balance that will suit you. Good point about the trolling motor batteries; being forward they help to offset the weight of the motor and operator usually riding at the stern. Alos as the load varies so should your trim. Good luck! :)

Re: trim adjust

With manual trim it is a compriomise, there is no one seting that works well everywhere so just play around till you find a setting that give you good top end but doesn't send the bow to high when going slow.

when I had my jon I ran the gas upfront too, helped to balance it pretty well.

The smaller the boat the more sensitive it is to weight changes, as I said play around and weight and you will find a sweet spot.

Re: trim adjust

when you have a person in the bow, you may need to move the bottom of the leg away from the transom, i you go out alone, you may need to move the bottom of the leg, closer to the transom.

closer to the transom, pushes the bow down, farther away from the transom pushes the bow up.

so this wednesday ill see what it does when i put it all the way down. i usually keep it 90 degress

Re: trim adjust

Every boat has a different optimum trim setting and variations in loading means the trim setting must be changed accordingly. My pontoon responds very well to trim settings except when heavily loaded. My suggestion is to cruise at about 4500 RPM and begin playing with the trim while watching the tach and speedometer. Any deviation from optimum trim will cause a loss of RPM and speed. On a pontoon you won't see significant speed/RPM changes but 1-2 MPH is possible -- more on high horsepower boats.

Re: trim adjust

I understand that. But using a constant load and load distribution, you can make the same identical run with the trim pin in a different hole. The tach and speedo will tell you where proper trim is. Using a GPS will help with more accurate speed data. Tucking the motor all the way in tends to make the nose plow. A perfect 90 degree angle would be better, but one hole up from that would probably be the best overall setting. Repositioning people can compensate for the effects of loading on your trim settings.
