Hello all, I've been looking all over online for some guidance on the best way to repair damage to the bow right on the deck/hull joint on a 12' Kolibri sailboat I picked up for restoration as you can see below:

*note: the damage is only to the deck fiberglass, it overhands the hull significantly so the hull is mostly intact where it meets the deck and the joint is still solid.

My initial thought was to simply glass the lip back bit by bit from top and bottom after grinding away, my concern with that is that I'd be glassing the deck lip into the hull, not sure if that would create any issue down the line with cracking ?

Anyone here familiar with this type of repair, just want to get some ideas as to the best way to tackle this.

Thanks,

HB

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... More pictures of many different angles would be nice,...gotta see the other side,...

It can be done by buildin' yer self sorta a Mold, usin' tapes, cardboard, plastic strips, Whatever, to hold the resin soaked fabric in position, til it sets up,...

It could be a simple as a strip of duct tape bridgin' the gap,... it's just gotta hold the initial castin' in place to set,...

After that, it's alota sandin', fillin', fairin', 'n more sandin'....

Tricky thing rebuilding stay backers. They are structural ..

Thanks guys, I figured I'd have to just make a mold and glass the lip in that way, here's a photo (pardon the dirt it was taken before I cleaned the boat) of the underside of the joint, you see the damage is confined to the lip itself and stops before the actual joint. The forestay should be ok, it's riveted to the deck, I might pop the rivets to check for cracks and reseal using bolts to a backing plate, would make it a bit easier to sand and paint also.

Oh and after the shots were taken I was playing with that piece of lip that goes from the crack to the missing chuck and it came right off so the chunk of lip missing now goes all the way to the aft crack you see in the photos. The riveted hull/deck joint looks good to me

Based on that last pic the damage most certainly does go into the joint so you need to separate the hull and deck.
