Great Tip......and I always buy LH reels...I hate switching hands after every cast to crank.

Me too.

I've seen the thumb trick work (the first time I casted a baitcaster) but never made it work myself.

That is one sweet trick, I have been fishing rivers for steelhead/salmon for decades with a level wind. I was happier than a pig in @#$@ when they came out with reels with removable spools, I can have my spool out, the rat nest cleared , and the spool back in a matter of seconds. But it does not compare to this method.

I have always cranked my reels with my left hand, it was only years later that I learned that left - right hand reel refered to the hand you cranked with and not the hand that held the pole.

Fishing for steelhead they have such a soft bite I was/am worried I would miss the touch with my left on hand the pole

that is a great tip, and it was meant just for me lol, I always get birds nest on my reel, and I would spend most of my time cutting the line and re-tieing, and then when the fish start hitting I get another birds nest, by now I go back to the spinning reel, so this tip will work great for me..... thank you

I wonder if it works on braids? I'm right handed - I reel with my left as well!

I found this in in related videos while checking out jigngrub's Japanese secret weapon and didn't want to hijack. Also thought it deserved its own thread.

I've never heard of this technique before and I can't wait to try it. Of course, I'm so good I never get backlashes so I'll have to do one on purpose I guess. Or dial down the mag brake and cast into the wind.
