I found this in in related videos while checking out jigngrub's Japanese secret weapon and didn't want to hijack. Also thought it deserved its own thread.

I've never heard of this technique before and I can't wait to try it. Of course, I'm so good I never get backlashes so I'll have to do one on purpose I guess. Or dial down the mag brake and cast into the wind.

That was a great find! It went right into my favorites file for future reference.

Sweet. I'll have to give it a shot. I'm new to the bait caster so I have this a lot.

Notice how he's right handed but has a left hand reel and cranks with his left hand and casts with his right.

The next baitcaster I buy will be left hand crank. I started using baitcasters about 14 years ago after after many years using spinning tackle. I'm still more comfortable cranking with the left and playing fish with the right and I'm right handed.

Learned that as a kid from dad on an old shakespear, useing braided line. Now I don't use them because like spin casters all the time.

I got lucky and my first Bait caster was bought used. It was a lefty and so I got started using a lefty from day one. I agree about comfort and also my right arm is a lot stronger and more coordinated than my left.

Great Tip......and I always buy LH reels...I hate switching hands after every cast to crank.

Huh I always thought the best way to clear a backlash was to keep, the rod and reel in the garage. (just kiddin Ill have to try that next time out)

Re: Trick for clearing baitcaster backlash

I started using baitcasting reels this summer. Ran across this video when trying to learn how to properly cast. I have had the opportunity to use this technique numerous times (lol) and it has proved its worth. Only had one time that I was unable to get a very nasty backlash out but I was toying with changing the line anyway, so the nest was a good excuse to re-line. During the same time I also read about going to a ball field and tying the line to a fence, walking the reel capacity while letting the the new line off the spool, and then wind it on the reel with tension. I had less backlash after that, but it may be related to the practice, practice, practice part of using baitcasters!

Thanks Bassman!

I've been doing it for years, I tighten the friction first, not sure if it helps or not, and you must press firmly or it does not work as well. I also use left handed baitcasters, but I'm right handed and I wonder why some baitcasting reels don't come in left handed models?

When I was a kid,and someone got a backlash on our Ambassadors, dad would get mad trying to get them out, so mom started picking out backlashes w a small sewing pick w a notch on the end. She could undo them quickly. Ambassadors are easier to untangle than smaller more enclosed v spooled baitcasters though, as is heavier line on any real IMO.

Left and Right handed reels are sort of like Metric Crescent wrenches.. Just flip the rod over to go from left to righ.. Just kidding. Mine are all left handed. I tried a right handed Quantum once but didn't like it.

Great tip ! Took me a few months and about a hundred backlashes to learn to cast my Pen on a hard rod for musky. Sure wish I knew that trick then--lol
