Try rotating the bolt with some vise grips back and forth and hit the top of the bolt with a suitable hammer. Hopefully the cavity is not rounded out so much that it will not keep the new nut from spinning.

Kenny, I was worried about the nut cage being rounded out. Unfortunately between work and other family obligations I have not had a chance to look into it at all.

Ed, sorry but being a Mopar guy who loves boats I am stuck working on chevy engines. The comment about the chevy engine is just my sarcastic way. No real harm meant by it.

you could do a Cummins Diesel conversion. CMD offered many diesel options in front of mercruiser drives.

Unless you what to be finding a new inner transom plate, DO NOT hit the end of the bolt with anything. That 'nut-cage' is just part of the aluminium casting, it WILL break off if you hit it...

If the nut is original, it's also aluminium. The idea of a screwdriver in beside the nut to lock it is probably the best one.
