Transom thickness

I have a question about the thickness of my transom, the old transom was 1 7/8" thick, including the 3/8" hull thickness. My outdrive owners manual says it should be between 2"-and 2 1/4". So if I use 2 pieces of 3/4"plywood plus the 3/8" hull that puts me right back at the 1 7/8" for the original thickness. My question is how much will the 1.5oz CSM add per layer? and should I place a layer inbetween the 2 layers of 3/4"ply or just glue those together with PL and then lay up over the whole thing once its glued in place? I was hoping to put atleast 2 layers of CSM on for strength, then tab it in or should I tab then lay up?

Re: Transom thickness

L,
If you go with your indicated lay-up schedule, I would go with 1708 over the first layer of CSM. It will add much more thickness and strength than CSM. Two layers of 1708 should get you additional 1/8" you need for the 2" minimum on the transom. Hopefully the real experts will chime in here and provide more knowledgeable advice than I've given.

FWIW,

Re: Transom thickness

I am no expert but I have heard that the following layup will be about 1/8 inch thick: 1.5oz CSM-then 18oz woven roving-then1.5oz CSM. I don't know what materials you may already have, but I was able to find the woven and CSM cheaper than buying 1708. Curious to see if anyone objects to this schedule of layup.

Nothing has been purchased yet except the marine plywood and the PL!

Bond the transom together with adhesive, then glass the whole thing in.

No need to use 1708 and CSM, 1708 already has CSM on it, 2 or more layups of 1708 (depending on your desired thickness) is all you need.
