I am working on aVolvo aq130c on a 16 foot F/G hull.
I have been warned by two people that the transom thickness should stay exactly what as it was before. I really cannot see why this is. The gimbal housing bolts directly to the back of the transom by 6 bolts. There is no inside transom plate on the other side, it just has large washers and nut on the inside.
The engine does not come into contact with the inside of the transom at all. It mounts to the gimbal housing by 6 bolts and cantilever is out from there without mounting to anything inside the hull.
The only difference I see if the transom we're a little bit thicker, is the nut and washer would be a little further up the gimbal housing bolts. Somebody please correct me if I am wrong.

You have had several lookers but no comment, so maybe mine will stir the pot. Not a VP guy but Merc and VP are real close in most things so I would say they are the same in this also. The reason being is a boat manufacture wants to build boats, so if they have to change their transom thickness based on which motor is installed, that would be an issue.

So with that, I would make it between 2 and 2 1/4
This thickness allows for 1/4 gelcoat, 2 layers of 3/4 plywood, and glass exterior. Make sure 8 inches all around the key hole outside area is flat and true to within 1/8 inch

The AQ series of drives are more tollerant of transom thickness. However 2" - 2-1/4" is industry standard
