Ok I have a 76 manatee tri hull, it has an 80 hp merc on the back, and its been garage kept so its still pretty solid for its age, but I've noticed a little wood rot at the top of the transom and don't know the extent of it yet cause I haven't had the time as of late, I have done a transom on a i/o boat but never on an outboard, is there a big difference between the two different style transoms? Considering that the whole engine is just hanging off of it instead an out drive, any suggestions and knowledge would be greatly appreciated and hopefully make my job go alot easier, thank you for your time

Welcome aboard, powerplant...first thing you need to do is post some pictures...we love pics around here like dogs love bones...You'll get plenty of help here..as far as outboard transom...most of us use a couple of pieces of 3/4" plywood, sandwiched with either peanut butter or some other adhesive like tite bond or pl premium..then after getting the old one out (leaving the outer glass skin), it's just a simple install with pb & tabbing. Check nurseman's thread on the lund....he did a great job on his transom recently and photo document very well..hint...he likes clamps...and lot's of them!! On another note, a boat that age, even well-cared for has a high likelihood of also needing stringers & deck, so don't be surprised when you demo and find some mulch..Fix her up with some new wood & glass & she'll last another 35 yrs. Good luck...the experts will be along shortly..

Well as for the transom I was gonna use 2 3/4 ply and add a 1/2 play to put me at the 2 inch mark if possible and hope and pray the stringers are in good enough condition that I can use them to moc up new stringers, after I lay it all down I was thinking of using new glass to cover and seal it and ass a precaution using gel coat to make sure its sealed, hope I'm on the right track with my thought pattern on the with this project, and yes i will definitely post plenty of pics along the way and give a dog a bone lol, thank you for the suggestions and thank you guys for the welcome

Sounds like you're developing a plan of attack :encouragement: Don't worry about the stringer pattern too much...we will help you if you need to fabricate new ones from scratch.. I would love to see pics of the boat and what it's sitting on before cutting the structure out of the hull.

Read as much as you can...stickies at the top of the resto forum are a great resource... reading other restos will also aid you in understanding what lies ahead on your rebuild. Everyone here has a love of bringing back the original beauty of these boats.... We like to make them SAFE and dependable !

:welcome: to The Dry Dock!

powerplant454, before you cut, rip, remove, or do anything else, do read some of the other restore projects on here. It will give you a much more round about thought process and save you much time and effort as well as redoing anything too. There are tons of project that were in your same shoes with their boats. So don't reinvent anything. Read some of the projects and enjoy. With the amount of info on here to read, you will never run out of things to read... I await your pictures to get started...

Welcome PP, it also looks similar to my 18' Omega Tri-Hull.

I agree, reading some resto threads here really helps.

Good luck!
