Re: Transom Saver for old 40 year old outboard?

My last boat came with a 42 year old 35 hp johnson with no power tilt/trim. It came with a transom saver. No problem using it whatsoever. The new boat (1990 40 hp Eevnrude with Power tilt/trim) did not come with a transom saver. I had to mount it with a bolt on bracket to the trailer due to the fact that the cross bar was way back under the trailer with no rear roller. Works great. This is the one I got.

Works great. Goes into the bracket with a half twist to keep it from bouncing free.

Oops, I just looked at your picture. With your arangement, this one is likely too long. Get the standard one that goes on the roller. Given that there is some question as to whether it might fit, I would get it from Walmart. That way, if it does not work, it is easy to return. Sorry iboats. I bought mine from you, but in his case I would probable by one where it is a 5 minute drive to return it.

Thanks Terry, also great college choice- go Spartans!

Anyways, would the roller kind work on my trailer though? Typically, when the boat isn't wound so far up the trailer, the boat sits on that back roller. How does the roller kind work, doees it detatch and reattach once the boat is on the trailer? Sorry for my ignorance on this.

EDIT- Does just the pressure of the boat motor hold it onto the roller? If so, would this one work with my boat and 50 hp?

If you're buying through mail order and not in person, I'd go with the one I showed you at Westmarine because it is a "dual mount" unit that comes with the extra parts to allow two mounting options: over the roller with the "U-bracket" or with a quick release fastener which may bolt onto the trailer cross member below the roller. This gives you two chances for success and reduces the possibility of an annoying mail order return.

And "YES" the entire transom saver comes on and off every time you launch your boat.

Ki Ki, I used a transom saver with my old '73 Johnson without tilt and trim. My trailer setup looked identical to your. I went to BassPro and picked up their basic model. It has a V-shaped receiver on one end that your motor's lower unit goes into. That end is secured with an included bungee. The other end has a C-shaped receiver that goes on your roller. There's little wire cable that goes around the roller to keep it from possibly bouncing off. I really liked using it because it kept the motor not only from bouncing but from going from side to side also. I highly recommend it to you.

Ki Ki, most walmarts carry transom savers for $20. Cheap way to save yourself alot of money down the road.

And I'd bet that'd be pretty much the same one I got from BassPro so if they have it, grab it.
