I'm replacing the transom board in my Lund 16'aluminum boat using marine
Plywood. I'm also mounting a different motor on it and it has had
a few on it since 1984 so there are several holes it the aluminum
that I want to seal up. I bought a epoxy aluminum putty stick from west marine
will this work or last or should I have them welded.

Re: Transom repair

Hi and welcome to the Iboats.com dry dock, Steve...
I am by no means a aluminum boat expert, don't play one on TV and did not sleep at a Holiday Inn in a very long time...:)
I do know that the tin guys have repaired their transoms using similar materials such as the one you mention along with JB Weld, MarineTex, etc...
Some guys even get a new piece of aluminum to cover over everything and either have them welded on or riveted on & sealed with 3M 5200...
If you give it a bit of time, I am sure some of the really knowledgeable metal doods will pop in soon and give you some other ideas...
Best of Luck and Have Fun!

Re: Transom repair

GT1M is on the right track for sure, depending on if the holes are going to interfere with the new installation can have some bearing on the fix. Posting some pictures so we can see what your working with would help a lot. I would imagine with the new transom installed you only have holes in the aluminum skin, fill them flush with epoxy putty, then as GT said get a piece of 1/8 th aluminum cut it to form an patch wider and deeper than your motor mount, then fit it to the back side of your transom skin, frill for either closed end rivets or stainless steel screws, make sure none of them interfere with the motor mount, then slather with 3M 5200 and fasten the piece to the transom. You now have a blank slate to mount the motor on.
If you follow the link to post 465 you will see what I'm talking about. http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...-15-starcraft-jet-star-rebuild-455193-19.html

Don't cut the exterior transom skin off.

This ^^^ is why pix can be so important. If you are talking about removing a motor 'pad' that is already installed on the transom & replacing it w/ new, then that's great. But for sure don't cut the transom skin out for a few holes that may be minor & easily fixed another way........
