Hey all, I am redoing my boat as the transom and stringers were mush. Just wondering what wood to use. I read or heard Douglas fir. Is that the same as #2 SPF framing lumber? Is this a special order item? I am looking at the website of local lumber companies and they only seem to carry SPF framing lumber or 2x4x10 1/4 Fir. I am not finding what is listed as fir plywood for the transom. Please help me and tell me what will work! Thanks.

hi......welcome to iboats.

standard exterior grade plywood us my choice.
you need exterior grade because the glue is water proof.
and not the OSB chip board stuff.

i think the guys use accuro??? (sp)

plywood on edge is stronger than dimensional lumber....

use 3/4 for the stringers.......1/2 inch for the deck. the transom can be a one inch and 3/4 laminated together.....either with fiberglass....or a good bonding water proof glue.

I used the exterior fir for mine. I used 2, 3/4" pieces and glued (TiteBond) and screwed (Stainless wood screws) them together.
