Hello everyone, I discovered some dry rot in my 1973 16' Starcraft SS transom (out board). I am one who can't stand to know there is a problem with anything I own without digging in to fix it (the right way) sometimes it can back fire a bit so before I dig in I wanted to ask what some good tips would be ahead of time. Thank you in advance for ANY help.

Re: Transom Rebuild

Hey Green Giant,
Welcome to the club, I'd go check out some of the Starcraft restos in this thread http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=385090.
I think Huron Angler has pretty much the same boat as you do so I'd check that one out. I've never done a resto, but it almost feels as I have after reading so many things here. Good luck! :)

I have replaced an I/O transmon. Use marine plywood, seal the transmon on both sides, keep your old one for a template. There are others on hear who have replaced O/B transom and they will be very helpful. Fill in the corrosion on the alum. with jb weld and paint the alum before installing the transom.

Easy job. Just make sure you do NOT use pressure treated. The new PT eats aluminum.

Re: Transom Rebuild

Thanks guys, it sounds like I am going to want to sandwich two sheets together to get the thickness I need. Are these going to be 3/4" sheets? I am working off of a dial up connection (there is only so much time in a day) so bare with me if this was answered in one of the resto threads.

yep 3/4" sheet. marine ply is the best I got lucky and found some older PT ply at Lowes. lowes can order the marine for you at the construction counter.

Yes 2 sheets of 3/4, I glued mine together with water proof wood glue, used some wood screws to hold the middle together and and out farther then when I made it to the edges I clamped it.
I recomment sealing the edges of the plywood before you put it back in the boat. I think alot of these guys use a product I think is called csp it is some sort of wood epoxy or resin. I have never used the stuff, but I hear it is good

Re: Transom Rebuild

Welcome to the site Green...as mentioned I do have the same rig. I'm going to be rebuilding my transom later on after my interior is all done.

I'd recommend sealing all the exterior-grade or marine ply with epoxy resin. The edges really soak it in and that is a crucial area to seal.

Post some photos of the rig when you get a chance, we love these old Starcrafts:D

You can't see much of it here but this is what we like to use if for!
I'll get some good family shots up soon. Just about every time out I get a compliment on it (tan blonde wife makes it really look good ).

Green Giant welcome to the club

Nice fish. They look like springs to me. Where did you catch them?
Most of us put our location in our profile. It?s nice to see where a guy is from.
It?s seems we have locations from both coasts and everywhere in between.

Since you were looking for tips on the transom repair you might want to consider replacing the wood on the outside of the transom with a piece of plate aluminum.
That is if you have the wood on the outside. I helped a buddy with his transom last month and that?s what he did. So far so good.

I live in quite possibly the best place in the world.... Oregon! Those are Spring Chinook the cadilac of all Salmon. How critical is the use of marine grade ply wood? I am getting mixed answers from people and there is quite a price difference.

Thanks again.

Re: Transom Rebuild

Wow those are some nice salmon:D Look like 30-35lb range. We get 'em here in the great lakes too. Looks like you pulled those out of a river out west maybe?

That sure looks like a pretty, brand-new 'Rude etec hanging off the back:)

Those are some sweet outboards, quiet and great on fuel/oil.

Thanks again.

Those Chinook are beauties!!! Well done!

Exterior grade is perfectly fine, you'll need just a little more epoxy to seal them up as compared to marine grade. AND, save a bunch of $$$ too!

Have Fun:D
