I have 1986 sylvan eliminator 17ft and I am replacing transom. My question is there anyway to fix the holes made from a kicker mount and other attchements do to previous owner or owners. Besides the obvious of placing bolts and screws back in and sealing..thanks 20220203_185350.jpg

When I redid my last two, I cut a piece of aluminum.
applied 3m 5200 to the back, then secured in place.
Primed and painted.

Used rivets to attach it where it was just aluminum transom.
Used screws where there was wood behind the aluminum.

Depends on how far are you going to tear it down to replace the transom?
If you are going to remove the outer skin and replace all the wood then just get a new sheet of aluminum and replace it all. Start over. There are only a few ways to fill holes, plug them, or cover them up. Putting bolts with sealer is a quick and good fix as long as the bolts are same size as the hole with washers of course. Think of them as battle scars that She has weathered over the years.

I tore it all down even the splash well. Not the outer skin thou, I didnt wana go and take all the buck rivets out and try and make a whole new skin and replace I am not that talented. I'd love to do that but seems alot. I could but bolts and screws back into the exsisting holes but I dont wana drill unessar holes in a new transom wood. Do u think jb weld or epoxy would work.

Thanks for the reply, the back of you transom looks good. I just dont wana put unneeded holes into the wood of a new transom. But it's looking like unless I replace when whole skin there is no other option. And I really dont wana get into re buck rivets and bending of aluminium. I'll prob go with your method on the bigger holes.

Depending on how thick the aluminum is you can buck double flush aluminum rivets. Leave a tail on back if need be. that way even tho you can see where those holes were they will not be thru the new transom. A trick is to use super glue under the head to seal it when you buck them. I used to work in the sheet metal shop at my employer. Worked on aluminum airplanes quite a bit.

That is major corrosion with exfoilation. I know it would be a lot of trouble, but that really needs replaced. If you cover it with a big doubler (piece laid on top and riveted/bolted to original) It will continue to corrode under it. Good luck. Keep us posted the pics are great.

Did you ever get the outer transom reskinned?? I'm replacing a transom on a 91 Sylvan Pro Fish 18.5 in the next week or so. Both motors came off easily so I'm feeling hopeful that I can pull transom out in one piece.
