transom mounted livewell pump installation

Previous owner had mounted a livewell pump through the transom and I noticed that he had only sealed it on the INSIDE. Pulled everything apart and found the wood inside the hole to be somewhat wet but still intact.

So, after I let everything thoroughly dry what's the proper way to mount the pump? What I'm thinking is to seal the inside diameter of the hole with epoxy, pipe dope on the threads, then sealant on the outside between the transom and plastic nut. Am I on the right track?

thanks

Re: transom mounted livewell pump installation

If it's a wood transom, you may still have water trapped in there, I would be EXTRA sure it's completely dry and there's no rot before moving on.

Anyway, that's all I have to offer, I'm not quite sure how the livewell pumps work in the first place, so I don't think I can help you out too much there. I will be just as interrested in hearing other's responses though.

Most through transom livewell pumps have a threaded pipe attached.

The proper way to mount them is to have a nut on each side of the transom. You should have two. The have a washer attached that is slightly larger than the nut.

The nuts should be sealed with 3M 5200 sealer. You can get the sealer at iboats, Ace Hardware, Lowes, Home Depot.
