Transom/Motor Height? Help Needed!

Hello everyone, first post here.

My question is slightly complicated because of ignorance on my part. I have bought an Xpress 1650VJ jon boat that I intend to use with my current motor. It is a 1981 35hp Evinrude tiller steer. The boat has a 21" inch transom and my motor measures 18" from the bottom of the mounting bracket to the cavitation plate. My first question is will this work? The boat is advertised as having 6 degrees of pitch at the transom so I know it will be slightly shorter than 21". Second question is if this doesn't work what are my options? i have a friend that has a fab shop that could cut the transom down and make it look factory, but I hate to start cutting on a brand new boat. I haven't picked the boat up yet, but I did leave a deposit on it. Dealer does not have any 16" transom models on the lot and I hate to "crawfish" on the deal, especially since this is the exact boat I want. I really don't want to have to trade motors or sell mine and buy another one since I know my motor and it has performed flawlessly for me.

Sorry for the rambling but I have questions that need answers because of my own ignorance.

bottom of the cavitataion plate of the lower unit should be close to even with the bottom of the boat.

Your cavitataion plate on the lower unit should be up to and not more than 1" lower than the bottom of your hull

Welcome to iboats!

You're going to get prop ventilation with that setup, especially in turns. You might be able to get a long shaft lower unit by picking up an entire motor with a bad powerhead. Your best bet would be to ask in the Johnson & Evinrude Outboard forum section.
