i have a 1990 maxum 2100sc with that 120hp l drive. its running fine still. but when it dies next time (lol) id like to drop a mercruiser set up in her. for this to happen id be needing to do some transom work obviously. would i need to replace the entire trans or can you fill a hole and still have a strong end result? just to be clear I'm not asking how to do this ,,just if it can be done with success. your the pros.

do it right the first time , replace the transom, and you won't be worrying about it and will enjoy the boat much more.

Re: transom modification or replace?

I did it once on an old runabout. Screwed a larger piece of plywood with a piece of laminate glued to it to the inside of the transom, cut "plugs" that fit snugly into the hole, and proceeded to layer epoxy, glass, and the plywood plugs until I had the hole filled. The plywood I screwed to the inside was just a backing that was removed. Then I matted the whole thing on both sides. Hung an outboard on her; a good friend still owns this boat and uses it regularly. It looks good and performs well. It's all in the prep work. If you find any softness in the transom when you pull it apart though... a new transom is in order.

Re: transom modification or replace?

would it be better to leave the plywood for added strength? i was thinking of screwing 3/4" marine grade and follow by fiber and epoxy on both sides.i need to fill not only the transom but a 1 foot piece of hull aswell. when the ldrive comes out and moter mounts removed , it will leave a square hole about a foot and a half across.and the same in the hull.there are two stringers (or what ever you call them) running along side of the "hole"in the hull. ill be able to screw into thoes and get a very strong fix. i tend to over kill some times,am i doing it again?
