Hi. I just started yesterday to replace the floor and transom on my 1988 Starcraft islander 221 v and I already have the engine, outdrive and transom off. I did not expect to get this far so soon but I'll take it. I had planed to use the 60$ Dr.rot layup & laminating resin between the 3/4 sheets of marine grade plywood and I am wondering if this is needed or should I just use a waterproof wood glue as that's what the plywood layers are glued with? I was planning to use 2 coats of Dr.rot CPES then 6 coats of helmsman spar varnish. I will post pics as soon as the wife or kids are available as I'm not very computer talented. So do I use the waterproof wood glue or the laminating resin? I am not worried about the 60$ cost I just wonder if its needed? Any other suggestions are always great. THANKS.

Re: Transom lay up & laminating resin

Rot Doctor is a waste of money IMHO. It's basically Thinned Epoxy and does not offer any better protection than basic Epoxy and prolly less. Thinning epoxy breaks down the chemical composition of the product and renders it less effective. Again just my opinion but there is some scientific evidence if you want to do your own research.
For glue... HalfFish is correct. I'd recommend the TiteBond III or regular epoxy and I'd use Regular Epoxy to coat the rest. Or, If you want, you could use the old time wood preservation technique of saturating the wood with a mixture of 33% Boiled Linseed Oil 33% Mineral Spirits and 33% Marine Varnish. Really soak it on and pay attention to the edges of the plywood. When it starts to "Pool Up" Wipe of the excess and let dry for 48 hours. You can then either apply 3-4 coats of Full Strength Marine Varnish for a Natural Look, Or 3-4 Coats of Rustoleum Professional Oil Based Paint and your transom, with proper maintenance and care, will last for Decades.

Check out us composites prices on epoxy, 1 gallon will come close to doing your transom, and floor pieces 2 coats both sides and will last longer than we will. tite bond II works great between the layers on the transom.
Epoxy :?Epoxy Resins and Hardeners
635 thin epoxy with med. hardener works great.
Just my opinion,

I agree on epoxy from US Composites, it works well and is affordable.

As far as adhesive for gluing your 3/4 plywood together, I've done it two different ways. One is to mix up a slurry of epoxy, milled fiber, and cabosil. I've also glued the pieces of marine ply together with PL construction adhesive, that worked perfectly as well (and costs less). The trick is to use a notched trowell, get the adhesive evenly spread over the entire surface, and clamp well while the adhesive cures.

I used Titebond III to glue together the layers of my transom, too. Great stuff.
