Hi all,

We're rebuilding an old Chrysler Charger (late 60's) and we're about to install the transom. My buddy and I are debating over whether to use a mat and resin combo to secure the transom to the hull or to use PL construction adhesive (FastGrab Premium - 8x stronger). Looking for some input that may help put the debate to bed.

Thanks.

If you are using epoxy there is no need for mat. If you are doing all the rest of the work with epoxy I'd go that route.

First things first RebuildRookie, :welcome: to iboats. Nice having you aboard...

Six of one half dozen of another. I personally would go the polyester peanut butter route myself and have actually done that on my boat. So I am a little biased towards poly. I suggest you read a few of the boater rebuilds on these forums and see what they have done. There is more to it them gluing a couple pieces of wood for a transom. So you need to see what they have done and mimic their methods. Most take exterior grade 3/4" plywood andcut two parts to fit the transom. Then poly coat them with polyester resin and CSM (Chopped Strand Mat) and cover the plywood to water proof it. Then poly the two plywood parts together with tons of clamps. And once they are cured, then mix up polyester resin, Cabisol and 1/4" fiber fill to a peanut butter consistency and with tons of clamps, poly it to the transom that has been grinded clean of all old fiberglass and rotted wood. JMHO!

You can use either one. If you use epoxy make sure that you add a filler to thicken it up to make a paste such as talc or microballons. I also have seen PL construction adhesive used without any problems. Your boat was built using polyester resin. With that being said you can tie in your matting with polyester resin without any issues just make sure that you sand and expose fresh fiberglass before hand and wipe down with acetone.

Thanks!

We've been doing lots of reading on here already! Lol.. Used two layers of 3/4" ply, lamenated w/epoxy and completely glassed over with epoxy and 1.5oz chop mat.. Hull has been completely ground out and is clean.

Thanks for the input so far! Would upload pics but am on my phone right now.

Yeah, thickened epoxy resin and a good clamping system would be the best route to go.
