So I was mking a template for my transom wood today and I noticed the hull thickness from the bottom of the keyhole (outdrive hole) to the top goes from 1/2" at the bottom to almost 1/4" at teh top. I read somewhere that the thickenss needed to be iniform for everything to line up.

Is this a bad thing, and if so what would be the best way to fix (adjust) it?

Ayuh,... It's gotta be True, 'n Flat...

Build it up with fillers, or grind down the high spots,...
Your choice...

Thanks for the Reply bondo. Can I use glass on the final skin to build the thickness?

I would. I built up the bottom of my bilge using 1708 so that water will drain better. I found 30g hook-n-loop disks for my DA sander at west. It would help making the final surface flat.

The problem is that the transom is like this all the way across. You would have to use gallons of filler to flatten it out. My thought was to build the top up with glass, and slowly step it down to match the rest. I would then sand it down and finish with a final coat of glass.

I have the same problem. I did my practice yesterday. What I plan to do is:

1. Add a layer of 1708 on the skin
2. Use a mixture of epoxy; 206 hardener and carbosil to make a paste
3, Spread this across the skin, adding a little more over the thinner areas
4. Attach the epoxy-1708 coated ply to the skin
5. Use light pressure
The 206 hardener will give you time to work before epoxy setting
When I removed my old transom, and after sanding away the filler to the fiberglass I discovered the same situation. I have a 21 foot 78 glastron. It was extremely difficult to remove the unrotted part of the transon.

That will work Jay. Once its even, then add your ply. Just make sure that you maintain the final overall thickness requirements for your I/O.

I'd add it to the engine side of the wood. Otherwise you'll have resin running out of the drive hole outside of the boat. I'd use multiple layers of fabric to build it up too in decreasing heights. Be careful of the heat and fumes if you do it all at once. You can use filler to fair out the seams. It seems to me that would be the fastest way and plenty strong, although a bit pricey. Microfiber filler will add lots of strength, but it's harder to sand than silica. You'll need some type of filler to keep the resin put. I've done it and it works, but I'm no "master".
