Transom hight q's?

Where do i mesure for the hight of the transom? And where do you mesure an outboard to find out if its a longshaft or short?

Would it hurt anything if i had a long shaft on a short shaft boat?

A longshaft motor will perform horrible on a shortshaft boat. Huge amont of excessive drag caused by the gearcase too low in the water.

Picture below shows where typical 'shaft length' measurements are taken. Not all engine manufacturers have the same lengths, nor do all boat manufacturers use the same length transom.

Most vintage boats were 15" transoms. Modern boats 20" transoms are the norm for inshore use, where 25" is the norm for offshore use. There is always exceptions.
