transom height

In my owners manual for my '72 rude 25 horse model 25202 for the length it says 15" transom. Is this talking about the motor transom length or the size of the transom the boat it should fit on. A long shaft is a 20" transom which would be model 25203. I know it's a weird question, but I'm thinking of rebuilding my trasom tomorrow cause my cavitation plate is sitting at least 3" below hull of boat. I think it needs to be at least 3" higher.

Re: transom height

15" and 20" refers to the boats transom height that the engine was designed to run on.

As a GENERAL rule, the cavitation plate should be about level with, or slightly above, the lowest point of the transom.

However, your '72' has a lower unit type that needs to run a little deeper.

If your transom is 15" now, rebuild it to the same dimension.

rebuild as is, then later if you get another motor you can add a jack plate. this is my homemade jackplate.

i'm also moving this to the boating forum.

Re: transom height

That is a nice homemade jackplate. Just build me one and ship it to Ohio:D

My brother rebuilt the one on the boat now. He said he followed the old one that rotted. The boat is a 1958 crestliner 14' as solid as they come. It's a great boat with high gunnels. Just the wood transom he rebuilt is only 11" and the hole stern of the boat measures from top to bottom of 14". The old motor they had on it was a '50's 8hp evinrude they used on small lake.
