I have a long shaft outboard. What is the best way to mount it on a transom that is designed for a short shaft?

Put the cavitation plate as high as the keel off your boat. You can use a bracket or just bolt it on.

Plugger,

I had the same issue, I was replacing the transom, so I am now set up for a long shaft.

Like "bigboy" said you can use a Jack Plate, doesn't have to be hydrolic, manual should be just fine.

I would be careful about bolting the motor too high on the transom. You need some "meat" to support the motor.

Depending on who you talk to, there are varying opinions on where the cavitation (ventilation) plate should be. I have always been told, start even with the bottom of the hull at the transom and then adjust from there based on performance. Plus or minus 1" seems to be where you will wind up.

Peace.

Ed.

You didn't tell us what you got but I run my 1975 9.9 longshaft on a 13' short shaft transom tinny. It breaks the "rules" but it works just fine.

SoLittle,

Right, good point, I was thinking bigger motor, I Just purchased a Suzuki 140, I will be mounting on my 18ft, I am being very carefull to double check my handywork. Pretty expensive motor to turn into an artificial reef!

With the smaller motors, it may not make a big difference as far as stress on the transom.

Peace.

Ed.

I have a 25hp Johnson on a 14' boat. I am just trying to save a little money. If the higher transom is only $200 more it might be worth it to go with the higher transom. Especially if I have to buy a bracket with the smaller transom.
