Plugger,<br /><br />I had the same issue, I was replacing the transom, so I am now set up for a long shaft.<br /><br />Like "bigboy" said you can use a Jack Plate, doesn't have to be hydrolic, manual should be just fine.<br /><br />I would be careful about bolting the motor too high on the transom. You need some "meat" to support the motor.<br /><br />Depending on who you talk to, there are varying opinions on where the cavitation (ventilation) plate should be. I have always been told, start even with the bottom of the hull at the transom and then adjust from there based on performance. Plus or minus 1" seems to be where you will wind up.<br /><br />Peace.<br /><br />Ed.
