Transom cracks on both sides

I was wondering if I could mat and glass the corners of my transom because the transom is in good shape but I think that it got cracked riding down some pot holed streets in Plano on my way to the lake. Do you think the mat and glass would hold without recracking? I plan to double up on the mat times 2 and sand it with new paint. The cracks aren't really bad but I don't want to chance getting out there and causing more damage to the boat. Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Re: Transom cracks on both sides

welcome to iboats, pictures would be a great help. hopefully your transom doesn't have other issues.

may do a check on this site for friscoboater. A member here on iboats that lives in frisco texas and could be a help to you as well. He does great work. He could maybe swing by and look as well if you ask.

good luck

sail on.....tink

You know your transom is probably shot and needs to be rebuilt.

I know it's not the answer your looking for but....

Re: Transom cracks on both sides

Maybe cracks caused by trailering boat around without a Transom Saver between motor and trailer? How big is your motor and how much does it weigh? Hopefully they're just cracks in the gelcoat, but the cracks are really not a good sign. Maybe you can re-inforce your transom with an aluminum plate or something? Photos would help a lot! Good Luck!

The only way it could crack is if it moved in a way it's not supposed to.

post some pics.

Re: Transom cracks on both sides

I will post some pics soon. It was from the trailering and the previous owner had a transom saver but he never locked the steering and the motor just jumped around from side to side. I have a Nissan 140 plus on back and it does not play! I didn't take the first pics before I pulled the grinder out but I can say that since the mat and glass it seems to be more solid than before. I stood on the lower unit and bounced around (240lbs) and it did not budge. I am in the middle of sanding to lay down some bondo to smoothin it out for refinishing. It's almost ready. The weather is a little bad right now but soon as mother nature finishes I will get r done.

I did not have the regular bondo. I have the fiberglass in the can (green) with pics of boats on the front. I will finish tonight.

Re: Transom cracks on both sides

It's poly resin with fillers, either way.

The fillers can be talc, milled fiberglass, short or long strand fiberglass or you can mix your own with cabosil, wood flour, micro balloons etc.

But it's still all poly resin.

Regular poly filler (biggest name Bondo) is just fine for use on your boat. Although it is not recommended for repairs under the waterline, because (mostly a concern on boats that stay in water) if damage happens and breaks through the protect barriers it will suck in water and the repair will blister off.

If your using milled fiber (Bondo calls jelly) your still going to want to use a glazing putty over it to get it real smooth before you paint.

Well I did the right thing to the boat and sold it a couple weeks later. Got a 21' Sprint with Johnson 200 V6. I got a new girlfriend! She runs fast just the way I like it and I don't have to keep her in the hospital every time I ride her hard......................Lol!

Re: Transom cracks on both sides

I was just saying that I got the transom fixed and decided to sell the boat because I got tired of repairing something on it. In 2010 I could only get out on the water 4 times because something kept going out on the boat. Can you blame me for getting rid of it? I spent a boat load of cash on the Skeeter and just got fed up with it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed with this one but I think I will be good for this year. It is a huge improvement over the Skeeter.
