I have an old aluminum boat that has some mahogany transom braces that need replacing. I'm replacing them with mahogany, but there's so many kinds I'm confused.

I've found Phillipine, Honduras, and African mahogany locally. What is the difference in these different types?

Re: Transom Bracing

Philippine mahogany is the most commonly sold in the US. Straight grain but a bit more open than African which is also a bit harder.

I've had no experience with Honduran Mahagany so I can't help you there.

You don't have to use mahogany unless you wish to. For a brace, any close grained hardwood or Marine plywood will work just fine.

In any case, I suggest epoxy coating the pieces to prevent water damage and rot.
