Re: transducer mounting location

Use the shoot-through hull mounting technique. Use the "Search" feature to locate posts dealing with this.

Re: transducer mounting location

Acoustics is everything when a transducer sounding performs as designed. There is no better method than unobstructed direct contact with the water to expect a transducer sounding to operate as the factory has "speced". When referring to "shoot-through" transducer installations, fiberglass or wood will absorb the transducer sound vibration emitted by a transducer, therefore, compromising or even eliminating the effectiveness of its sounding performance. An acoustic medium, such as epoxies we see frequently used to "stick" the transducer in place on the interior side of the boat hull, actually compromise the sounding even further by causing the "shoot-through" hull area to become more dense regardless of the hardness of the medium. Boat hull materials built of aluminum and other metals are also dense and reverberate an echo out of tune with the pulsations of your transducer causing erratic feedback, thus the reason why "shoot-through" installations in aluminum boats are ineffective. The transducer must receive the same rhythm it emits.

Re: transducer mounting location

Seems to be a lot of boats running around with depth finders as well as locators using the shoot through hull technique. The OP doesn't seem to have any options for stern mounting so that leaves shoot through hull. Just recently someone posted regarding a container filled with mineral oil and adhered to the boat, into which the transducer was placed. How well it worked was not indicated but unless one tries, nothing is gained. If it doesn't work, it's back to the drawing board. As an ice fisherman I can assure you a transducer will shoot through ice provided it is not porous.

I have the same question and I don't want to go with the shoot-through hull idea. If I was to place my transducer in front of those trim tabs will it effect the performance of the fish finder?
