Re: transducer making ticking sounds

I checked my manual and for the Lowrance Elite 5 the transmission power is 4000W PTP & 500W RMS which, according to dingbat, puts me right in the range of recreational units.

This has definitely created alot of differing opinions and I appreciate you sharing them all with me. I am going to see if I can actually get a Lowrance tech on the phone (yes, a real live person!) and see what they say when I bring up many of the points mentioned here, I'll let you all know what I find out.

Thought I'd give an update, this is the reply I got from CMC Electronics, the company Lowrance said I needed to deal with being in Canada. I also asked if running the main unit while the transducer was out of the water (ie boat trailered) damaged the transducer.

"The ticking sound you are hearing is a normal sound that the transducer will emit when it is working. Some models will produce a louder sound than others depending on the power that they transmit. If you are using the product outside of the water we do recommend you not have it on for a prolonged period of time since this may prematurely wear out the piezoceramic. Lowrance do have on their website an emulator (http://www.lowrance.com/en/Downloads/Product-Emulators/) that will mimic the operation of the product, and allow you to familiarize yourself with the features, without have to drain your boat battery or have the transducer running for a prolonged period. "

Re: transducer making ticking sounds

Hi dingbat, certainly not challenging you, I know very little about these electronics. Just thought you all might be interested in what the Lowrance rep stated about the ticking. I will be sure though that the transducer always has water in the water box when the main unit is turned on. Shouldn't be a problem as I should fill'er up in the spring and then empty it out end of fall for storage (concerned with freezing over the winter). If water was to leak or evaporate during the summer and the box goes dry I just assume the signal would be lost and my screen will flash indicating signal loss. Should be easy to avoid having it on and out of water for any period of time. Pretty tight fitting lid and small hole for the cable to pass through.
