Re: Trailer Wiring Problem

be sure the light assembly is well grounded. Typically they find there ground through the mounting bolts or screws. Be sure the metal they mount to is clean of paint and rust. Also make sure the white wire from the plug is well grounded to the trailer frame.
:)

I will check the ground once more, but really don't think that is it. But who knows. Thanks.

Are the light assemblies using a 2 filament bulb?
How many wires going to each light fixture?
Is it possible you have the wrong bulbs installed?
Remove the bulbs and look in the socket. Is there 2 contacts within? Does one of the contacts come live with the park lights on?

I would like to add just one comment....have you checked the bulbs? Get a known hotline from the battery and check each bulb. I have chased bad wiring to death only to find a NEW bulb burned out.

Bob

Re: Trailer Wiring Problem

Still having the same problem, but thanks to all for the help. Yes, I have amber lights and I have a conversion kit installed. Its commercial built for the Ford I have. The four wires I have coming out are all wired correctly...new lights both sides, new wiring harness. I still get no tail lights. Is it possible that I need a different kind of fuse or something? About ready to strap some flshlights on the back!

Re: Trailer Wiring Problem

TJ39,

My advice is to get a 12v battery, then via some wires, connect the negative terminal to the chassis of your trailer, then lightly touch the positive terminal to the different pins on your trailer's plug. Be careful because one of them will be the ground pin - which will short the battery. By doing this you should see all the different lights of the trailer working. If they don't work then you've determined the trailer wiring or bulbs are causing the problem.

If the trailer is OK, then you need either a 12v light bulb or a multimeter to test the output of your conversion kit on your car. Connect one terminal of the bulb or multimeter to the chassis of the car and test the other against the various outputs (pins?) of the conversion kit, while you switch the various lights on and off.

The above technique should tell you where the problem is and hopefully enable you to fix it.

Re: Trailer Wiring Problem

First of all hook your trailer to your truck. No matter what peeple say, your trailer lights work different when the trailer is not attached to your tow vehicle.

You have checked the brown wire out of the plug at the back of your truck? This works? If so check the brown wire in a few spots on its way to both lights. Check the brown wires and make sure they connect to the bulb socket inside the light housing. Make sure your test light has a good ground. It could be the ground you get when you actually hook the trailer to the truck. Trust me, check everything two or three times
