I own a 1981 Hydra Sports x-250 15' Bass boat and what i assume a equally old trailer for it. today when loading the the boat back on to the trailer, the winch post nearly ripped its self off of its base plate bolted to the tongue. now I've been looking for hours to see if i can get a replacement post but i cant seem to find one (i believe it to be a 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" x 80 degree post). so now i am wondering if getting a new post and winch/rubber bracket would be the better plan, and how much of a change this will have on my boats position on the trailer?

What we figured out from the aftermath is that bass socket side of the weld had rusted out, thus leading to failure. i have no photos of how the post should look or operate at the moment.Winch Stand with 1300 lb Dutton Lainson Galv (Large).jpg it is much like this assembly but that the whinch strap goes under the roller and the roller is a v-profile rubber.

on a side note, should i take this as a hint that the trailer is getting ready t fall apart and i should look at replacing it?

The winch post takes a lot of pressure especially if you winch the boat on, so it's important to replace it correctly. A major safety issue both while winching and trailering (it keeps the boat from climbing in the back window).

Also you need to line it up so the cable doesn't cut the rollers but pulls straight, and the bow eye comes in under the top roller/stop. This can be tricky if your bow rises during the process, such as with a break trailer or on a dry retrieve.

I'm thinking new trailer or get a trailer shop to do it.

thank you for the advice. i will have a look at replacing the trailer first thing next season (i have the boat winterized and shrink wrapped first thing October). i have been wanting to see if i can get a fixed bunk trailer made for bass boats for a while.
