Well I finally got tired of being worried about the dry rot on the tire sidewalls, so I decide to replace the trailer tires. Get all the lug nuts off but one....one is giving me a problem like it's crossed threaded, but I force the issue and.......SNAP. Yup, I snapped the lug halfway and think "M**********", now I have to pull the hub and get another lug bolt pressed in. Soooooo after I get all greasey and cleaning up the parts, this is what I see of the spindle.
EEEEEEEK.

The bearings look fine. No wear, rollers look good. Races fine. I can't see what caused this. OR if it was a manufacture thing and that's the way it came out in public. I haven't pulled the other side yet. I'll do that later today to see what kind of shape it's in.

Any thoughts?

Not sure I see what your problem is. Both areas that the bearings sit on look good still. What am I missing?

That's what I mean. Where the bearings ride looks fine. But what caused that defect? Am I just getting worked up for no reason?

Thanks for the reply.

Re: Trailer spindle

Are you talking about the forging defect in between the two bearing races?

Re: Trailer spindle

The rough area you see is not really a flaw and it has nothing to do with the operation of the bearings and hub. It's just an area that didn't require any machining and what you see is the bare casting. No need to machine something that performs no function.

Re: Trailer spindle

Thanks guys, I didn't think it would hurt anything other wise.
Just never seen a spindle like that. All the ones I've seen were completely machined.

I agree with him, as long as the bearing journals and the seal areas are in a good condition, you should have no problem. Your spindle is perfectly fine.

LOL!

It appears totally (well, mostly anyway) servicable. But that section of threads missing across the top of the threaded section might make it tough getting the nut started straight.

That's what I'd call a manufacturers second.

Do they even have trailer axle outlet stores?

Re: Trailer spindle

The flat on the threaded area of the spindle is machined to accept a flat on the inner ID of the washer. Keeps it and the nut from attempting to rotate. Some spindles have a longitudinal groove in the threads to accept a tab on the inner ID of the washer. This is perfectly normal.
